Will I need to rent a car?

Yes, a car is needed for shopping and exploring. There are no major car rental agencies on the island. We arrange all of our car rentals through Wilfred Major (242-334-2158), who is a close friend of ours. He will meet you at the aiport and take you to Point o' Vue. Rental cars on Eleuthera are often older models than those found at major agencies in the US, but Wilfred's cars are well-maintained and reliable. Boat rentals are also available - ask for more info.

Who are Cola and Columbus?

Cola Johnson is our fine housekeeper/cook, who will be at the house for four hours on Monday, Wednesday and Friday, and on the days of your arrival and departure to launder, clean up and bring in fresh flowers. Columbus is our property manager who can help with any questions about the house. He lives offsite. Both people are great sources of local knowledge.

What about food shopping?

There is “The Market” shopping center in Rock Sound that has a grocery, liquor store and hardware store. The grocery store in Rock Sound is very well stocked with all the basics. Meat and chicken are usually only available frozen – some guests do bring some from home. “Burt’s for the Best” in Tarpum Bay is the grocery store in Tarpum Bay. You can purchase conch, and fresh fish at the pier in Tarpum Bay directly from the fishermen or Mary can pick up fresh fish for you. Further afield, there is a grocery store in Governors Harbor, though we’ve found that the one in Rock Sound has a slightly better selection. Be aware that food prices in the Bahamas are usually somewhat higher than in the US, with the odd surprising exception (Irish butter or cheese anyone?).

What activities are available?

Snorkeling and diving (please bring your own gear), boating, fishing, kayaking, exploring the villages, finding your own private beaches, having a drink or meal at a local bar or restaurant are all great fun.

The privacy of the location makes it ideal for family togetherness, a couple’s getaway or a small business retreat. On many days you’ll stay right on Winding Bay and enjoy walking (it’s 2 miles around), relaxing on the 250 ft. of private beach at Point o’ Vue, and gazing at the night sky on the sundeck.

On the occasional rainy day you can watch the videos and DVD’s we have there (you may want to bring some of your own), enjoy board games or satellite TV and radio. There is a fine sound system for your favorite CD’s.

How is the weather?

Point o’ Vue is on the same latitude and 250 miles east of Key West, therefore, the weather is very similar.  Winters find temperatures from 65 to 80 with an occasional nor’easter. Spring and Fall are predictable and gorgeous with an occasional squall.  Summers are warm and July and August are great weather months with warm water and cooler temperatures following late afternoon showers, but you’ll be glad for the air conditioners in the bedrooms!

What about phone, email and fax?

There are phones at the house. Before going find out from your long distance carrier how to make calls from the Bahamas. The fax is on the main phone number. We can send set-up instructions for access to the Internet.
